Dry Eyes

What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or the tears are of low quality. Adequate quantity and quality of tears are necessary to maintain the health of your eye’s surface to provide you with clear vision.

Why are tears necessary?

Quality tears provide your eye with lubrication and help to reduce the risk of eye infection. Tears keep the surface of your eye smooth and clear by washing away foreign matter when you blink. When your eyes are not appropriately lubricated, both vision and comfort can suffer greatly.

Causes & Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye symptoms can result from an improper balance of tear production, production of low-quality tears, or inadequate drainage. While dry eye symptoms are most common as you age, they can affect everyone! However, if you are over the age of 50, we recommend you schedule a yearly exam to keep your eyes seeing their best.

Causes of dry eye include:

  • Some Rx medications
  • Medical diseases or conditions
  • Obstructions of glands
  • Hormone changes
  • Prolonged screen usage
  • Wind or environment
  • Age

Symptoms include:

  • Scratchy, gritty or burning eyes
  • Excess watering
  • Blurred vision
